In a follow-up to my last blog of 10 June, 2024 (re: “Professional Event Associations: Strategic Investments in Meetings and Events Careers”), I want to address some of the many objections to joining associations that I frequently hear.
Joining a professional association can significantly enhance your career and business opportunities. However, many professionals hesitate, often because of misconceptions and objections that really cloud the true benefits. Let’s look at some common objections to joining professional meetings and events industry associations and why you should think again!
Objection 1: “It’s Too Expensive”
Oh? Consider this: While membership fees can be an upfront cost, the return on investment is substantial. Associations often provide members with access to industry-specific education, certification programs, and exclusive networking opportunities that can lead to career advancement and increased business revenue. Many members find that the cost is quickly offset by the benefits received, such as discounts on industry events, free access to webinars, and the potential to gain new clients or job opportunities through networking. Besides, many employers will often sponsor their employees or at least help with the charges. Ask yours! Even if they don’t, I can testify that I have always paid totally on my own and it has been worth every penny – and then some! Again, many of the benefits are FREE!!! It can cost you MORE not to join. What price do you put on your career?
Objection 2: “I Don’t Have Time”
Really? The concern about time commitment is valid to a point but usually exaggerated. Most associations offer flexible ways to engage, including online resources, virtual events, and on-demand learning options. Even minimal involvement can yield significant benefits. The time you invest in participating adds to your professional development, which enhances your skills and efficiency, saving time in the long run. Associations are also voluntary, so YOU decide what time you give.
Objection 3: “I Can Network Without an Association”
Sure, but How Effectively?: While informal networking is valuable, associations provide structured and high-quality networking opportunities that are hard to replicate independently. Being part of an association means connecting with a diverse group of professionals who share a common goal of advancing in the industry. This can lead to mentorship opportunities, collaborative projects, and direct access to thought leaders and decision-makers that you might not encounter otherwise.
Objection 4: “I Won’t Get Anything Out of It”
See what you may be missing! This objection often comes from not understanding or assuming what associations have to offer. Membership benefits typically include educational resources, industry research, job boards, certification programs, and advocacy for industry standards. The more you are active with the association, the more you are likely to gain. Active participation often leads to leadership opportunities within the association, which can further enhance your professional profile and credibility. After all, they can’t ask you to do anything by yourself and you’ll teamwork with others. You often get more out of it than what you put into it.
Objection 5: “I Don’t Need Certification”
But what if you have them? Even if you don’t currently see the need for certification, having recognized credentials can be a game-changer. Certifications from professional associations often show a recognized level of expertise and commitment to the field, making you more competitive in the job market. They can also increase your earning potential and open doors to new career paths that might otherwise be inaccessible. It certainly makes a difference for me!
Objection 6: “Associations Are Outdated”
Compared to what? This perception is outdated itself. Modern professional associations are continually changing and updating to meet the needs of their members. They use technology to offer innovative resources, virtual events, and online communities. Many associations also actively participate in advocacy, working to shape industry standards and policies, ensuring that their members’ voices are heard, and interests protected.
So you see, …
Joining a professional meeting and event industry association can be a significant step in your career development and business success. While objections are expected, it’s important to critically evaluate the real benefits and opportunities that such associations provide. From enhanced networking and educational opportunities to industry advocacy and professional recognition, the advantages far outweigh the concerns. By becoming an active member, you invest in your professional growth and the future of the industry.
