In the ever-changing hospitality industry, professional certifications are invaluable for career advancement, skill enhancement, and industry recognition. One such prestigious certification is the Certified Meetings Professional (CMP) designation, awarded by the Events Industry Council (EIC). But many ask, “is it really worth it for me”? Let’s take a look at the many benefits of earning your CMP certification and why you should go for it! I can tell you from my experience, it certainly is!
1. Enhanced Professional Credibility
The CMP designation is widely recognized as a mark of excellence in the meetings, conventions, and exhibitions industry. Earning this certification signals to employers, clients, and colleagues that you possess a deeper understanding of event management principles and practices. This recognition may just be the key to opening doors to new career opportunities and client engagements because it shows others that you are serious about what you do by committing to higher standards and continuous professional development. I have seen my clients take notice of my CMP designation. It has for me, in a few cases, meant the difference in winning business!
2. Expanded Knowledge and Skills
Preparing for the CMP exam requires a thorough study of best practices in meeting and event planning, covering topics such as strategic planning, project management, risk management, and financial management. This rigorous preparation ensures that certified professionals are well-versed in the latest industry trends and methodologies, enhancing their ability to deliver successful events and improve organizational outcomes. It definitely taught me a thing or two!
3. Networking Opportunities
The CMP community is a global network of over 11,000 professionals. By earning your CMP, you join an special group of peers, which can lead to valuable networking opportunities. Participation in CMP-specific events, forums, and associations facilitates the exchange of ideas and best practices, fostering professional relationships that can lead to collaborations, job referrals, and mentorship opportunities. I’ve been to some of these events and made some great connections with other CMPs!
4. Increased Job Prospects and Higher Salaries
Employers often prefer and some require the CMP designation for positions related to their companies’ meeting and event planning. This preference is reflected in job postings and hiring practices across the industry. Also, as something we all can appreciate, certified professionals typically are paid more than their non-certified counterparts. The investment in earning a CMP can therefore lead to significant personal payback over the course of your career. I’ve seen it make a difference in my bank account in my time!
5. Personal and Professional Growth
The process of earning a CMP shows your dedication to personal and professional growth. The preparation and ongoing education required to maintain the certification (every 5 years) make sure that CMPs are continually enhancing their skills and knowledge. This commitment to self-improvement not only benefits your own career but also contributes to the advancement of the entire hospitality industry. For me, I’ve learned so much from on-going education and it’s easy to do!
6. Competitive Advantage
In a competitive job market, differentiation is key. The CMP designation sets you apart from other candidates by highlighting your specialized knowledge and your commitment to being better at what you do. This competitive edge can be particularly beneficial when pursuing leadership roles or specialized positions within the hospitality industry.
7. Access to Resources
CMP holders have access to a wealth of resources provided by the Events Industry Council and its partners. These resources include industry research, best practice guides, professional development opportunities, and more. Staying informed about industry developments and emerging trends ensures that CMP professionals are always ahead of the curve.
8. Client Trust and Confidence
Whether your job has you working directly with clients or not, the CMP designation can significantly increase trust and confidence. Clients are more likely to trust their important events to professionals who have demonstrated their expertise and commitment through certification. This trust can lead to long-term client relationships and repeat business, which are crucial for success in the hospitality industry. And believe me, when clients are choosing who they want to handle their business, they absolutely do look for things like that!
So what about the time and cost commitments?
I’m not going to “snow” you. Yes, getting your CMP does take time and money.
It does take some off-time to study for it. I joined a once-weekly study group which I highly recommend, and man, am I glad I did! I’m not a great test-taker either, which is one reason why I found a study group to be best. The exam was challenging and would have been more so if I hadn’t joined the group. Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to do it the same way. There are many other ways to prepare – on your own and/or online with exam study materials for example. For me, nothing beat studying with others.
OK, and what is the financial cost? Currently, to apply for the CMP, it costs $350. Once your application is approved, you will need to pay for the exam, which costs $525. During your approval 12-month period, you may take the exam multiple times, but you will have to pay the exam fee each time you take it. After your approval period is up, you need to start the process over again and pay the applicable fees. Whoa, that’s $875! Yes, but here’s what you can do. Talk to your employer about sponsoring you – at least partially. That shows them that you are serious about improving yourself, which in turn helps the quality of the job you’re doing for them and can increase their bottom line! Apply for a scholarship. Meeting Professionals Intl. – M.P.I. (https://test.mpi.org/about/foundation/scholarships) and other industry organizations have them! Even if you have to pay it yourself, make it a goal to save to afford it (that’s what I did!). The investment is more than worth it for the aforementioned reasons!
Conclusion
Earning the Certified Meetings Professional (CMP) designation offers great benefits for those in the hospitality industry. From increased credibility and expanded knowledge to increased job prospects and higher salaries, the CMP certification is a valuable asset for career growth and professional development. By investing in this certification, hospitality professionals not only advance their own careers but also contribute to the ongoing elevation of industry standards.
It’s up to you but definitely check it out!
